The History of Zion United Church of Christ in New Baden
On September 25, 1898 was the laying of the cornerstone for the “German Evangelical Zion Church of New Baden, IL. This was the name the people of the congregation adopted. It was a nice heart and mind lifting ceremony, that even so there were thunderstorms in the morning and was attended by many. The building went along at a good clip and God sent his blessings. Every one hoped a livable, strongly faithful people could find a place for praying and strengthening.
On Thursday, March 2, 1950, what seemed like disaster struck Zion Church. The Women’s Guild was holding its monthly meeting, and the pastor had just finished showing a motion picture to the group, when someone noticed the smell of smoke. The smoke was noticed coming from a crack in the chimney in the church hall, where the group was meeting. The Pastor went into the basement and noticed flames at the base of the chimney, and immediately sounded the alarm. The fire had already made much progress and smoke was coming from the steeple when the fire department arrived. The fire spread from the chimney, which was situated between the hall and church, up through the area between the ceiling and roof of the church, and out the steeple on the east end of the church. The fire departments of New Baden, Mascoutah, and Trenton responded to the alarm, and through the valiant efforts of the town and the sub-freezing weather hindered the efforts of the firemen, and water was still being poured around 9 p.m. (the fire started around 3:45 p.m. the same day). Most of the furnishings, including the art glass windows which had been installed in June of 1949, were saved. The organ was destroyed by water. The damage was estimated $11,040.55 by the insurance adjuster, and a claim of $10,358.66 was paid by the Mutual Fire and Storm Insurnace Co. of Burlington, IA.
The congregation worshiped with the Methodist congregation the following Sunday. Through the work of many men and women, the church hall was cleaned up and temporarily repaired during the following week so that service could be held in the hall the following Sunday.
The history of Zion United Church of Christ Sunday School actually precedes that of Zion Church. In 1895, on the first Sunday after Easter, Mr. Christ Trost (a member of a Trenton church) instituted an Evangelical Sunday School in New Baden. The Sunday School met in a room of the public school with approximately fifty interested members. Early families involved included Rudolph Hertenstein, George Monkey, Henry Butzow, Andreas Mueller, and Christ Shchumacher. A Sunday School picnic was held in the summer of 1895. As the Sunday School grew, thoughts of organizing a church developed and in 1898 the German Evangelical Zion began in August. The original building site was purchased for the $85 and was 150 by 70 feet.
The new Church was built in 2015 just a few blocks away from the original church in New Baden. Today, many people call this church a home and we welcome any and all walks of life to join us.
